Welcome Summer!

Making Use of Extra Time

Now that the spring semester is over, I find myself with extra time to do stuff. What stuff? Well, everything that became second class when the school semester started. Now, every project that was placed on hold and every idea for personal and professional enhancement has resurfaced. If you're driven like me, that is exactly what happens when you slow down; you simply begin to think about other ways to occupy your time.

This will be one of my busier summers: first, I've already started a summer class in the MAPW program; second, I've picked up a cardio kickboxing class two times a week; third, I'll be traveling to my hometown in a few weeks, in addition to some other destinations; fourth, I'll be taking on a new venture with a local non-profit; and fifth I will hopefully commit myself to making more concrete plans for my future in professional writing. Oh, and did I also mention that I'll begin to make decisions about home improvement projects in the fall?

Wait a minute. Isn't the title of this post "Making Use of Extra Time"? Relax, it is. Sometimes, when we accomplish or complete something major, we immediately go into physical and mental relax mode. And for some of us, this rest time is the perfect opportunity to take on tasks that we enjoy doing or have placed on hold. What's even better is the amount of planning time we have during our down time.

As you can see, the latter part of my list has more to do with planning. While gaining something out of everything I plan to tackle this summer, I'll also begin to do some planning. Whatever you decide to do with your extra time, make sure you make it productive. Remember, don't start anything you can't finish, and don't take on multiple projects that you know you will leave unfinished. Take your time, and do things you enjoy and find ways to personally and professionally plan for the short and long term.
